The Genvia SOEL200 is the first fully operational electrolysis system commissioned by Genvia, representing a major milestone in the industrial deployment of our high-temperature steam electrolysis technology. The system integrates a full Balance of Plant capable of supporting up to five electrolysis modules. Steam is directly generated through a dedicated steam generator and does not rely upon any waste heat recovery, making it the main difference versus integration within real industrial environment such as at ArcelorMittal plant in Saint-Chely-d’Apcher.

The SOEL200 serves as a cornerstone of Genvia’s industrial validation strategy. It enables comprehensive Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of electrolysis modules, allowing teams to identify and eliminate early-life failures, validate system integration, and accurately characterize stack and module performance under real operating conditions before field deployment. By combining rigorous testing capabilities with industrial-scale operation, the SOEL200 plays a critical role in de-risking projects and ensuring the highest standards of reliability, performance, and quality for our customers.

Demonstrating how existing industrial facilities can decarbonize hydrogen production while maximizing energy efficiency is the core objective of the Genvia SOEL200 demonstrator at ArcelorMittal’s Saint-Chély-d’Apcher plant.

During the trial period, the system will replace a portion of the hydrogen traditionally produced through natural gas reforming with low-carbon hydrogen generated via high-temperature steam electrolysis. The project will also pioneer the flexible coupling of electrolytic hydrogen with the site’s existing Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) unit, creating a hybrid hydrogen production scheme capable of adapting to operational needs.

To achieve this, the demonstrator integrates a Heat Recovery Unit (HRU) and a Hydrogen Purification and Compression Unit (HPU), enabling the electrolyser to recover and utilize residual heat from ArcelorMittal’s continuous annealing process. By converting otherwise wasted thermal energy into a valuable process input, the project showcases a powerful pathway to reduce electricity consumption and improve the overall efficiency of hydrogen production.

As Genvia’s first industrial demonstrator leveraging waste heat recovery from an operating facility, the SOEL200 represents a critical step toward deploying highly efficient, low-carbon hydrogen solutions across energy-intensive industries.
